Rare is the time when I can identify that congress has done something right….Senate Bill 1492 is one of those rare times! This bill will make it mandatory in order to receive E-Rate (which provides most schools access to the Internet) funds, to teach cyber safety. Great story from eSchoolNews and the bill in it’s entirety is linked below. Currently this bill is waiting for the President’s signature as it has passed congress.
Here is the verbage that I love…they want to call this part of the bill the Protecting
Children in the 21st Century Act…here is the meat and teeth section for districts from the bill…
‘(iii) as part of its Internet safety policy is edu-
cating minors about appropriate online behavior,
including interacting with other individuals on social
networking websites and in chat rooms and
cyberbullying awareness and response.’’.
These are the types of discussions that I wish were happening more and more. eSchoolNews does a great job of presenting both sides to this relatively new problem facing school districts. Other issues that will or are being addressed are open access by students personal devices, opening access to more content on the web (being less restrictive on filtering). Lamar County MS has made their self known by banning teachers and students from contacting each other through social networks. Enjoy this article!
